Learning the Basics of How to Fly a Rocket in Kerbal Space Program
By The Anarchist – FourTwoZero Creations
What’s up everybody? Welcome back to another installment of my Let’s Play Kerbal Space Program series!
In this edition, we’ll be launching into the Basic Flight Training Exercise within the long list of KSP tutorials, in an attempt to learn how to actually control our rockets during flight!
This tutorial is perfectly suited for those just beginning their journey into KSP, and even if you just need a refresher course on the basics of flight!
During this training exercise, we’ll get to learn the basic flight controls required to navigate our rockets through space, which include the Pitch, Yaw, and Roll controls!

We also get to learn how to activate different stages, and launch, our spacecraft from the Launchpad or Runway, depending on whether you are launching a rocket or a plane!
Next, we learned what the NavBall is, and what it can tell us. Such as where we are heading and how fast we are traveling!
After that, we got to learn about the various flight indicators included within the instrument panel at the top of our screen, such as the Altimeter, Vertical Speed Indicator, and the Atmosphere Gauge!
Right before we were able to launch, we also received some information regarding the Parachute Safety Indicators! We learned that there are 3 separate background colors related to how safe the parachute is to stage, and 3 separate parachute colors, which indicate the condition of our parachutes!
Finally, we were able to launch our rocket, and watch it reach a somewhat respectable altitude, although we were no where near reaching the vastness of space!
Overall, this was a very important training exercise in our quest to master the art of space travel within KSP, and is going to be vital information moving forward!
For a more detailed description of this training, make sure you check out this post, which I recently posted on the Hive Blockchain. You do have to be a Hive member in order to vote or comment, so I’ll be writing a blog post about that here soon as well!
That’s going to do it for this one! Make sure to tuned-in next time, where we launch into the Intermediate Construction Training, and learn some new tips and tricks for when we place parts on our rockets!
Thank you all for reading, and I hope you enjoyed this post!
